How Does an Air-Cooled Chiller Work?

11/29/2024

An air-cooled chiller is a common refrigeration equipment solution, primarily used to provide cooling water to maintain stable industrial process operations. It achieves the cooling effect by transferring heat away from the lower part of the coolant through a series of sophisticated components and processes.

How Does an Air-Cooled Chiller Work?

The air-cooled chiller is mainly composed of four core components: radiator, condenser, expansion valve and evaporator. These four components work together to form a complete refrigeration cycle.

The Working Process of Refrigeration Cycle

The initial stage of the refrigeration cycle is the compression process. At this juncture, the refrigerant is drawn into the compressor, where it undergoes a significant increase in temperature and pressure. The refrigerant transitions from a low-temperature, low-pressure vapour state to a high-temperature, high-pressure vapour state.

The compressed refrigerant vapour, subjected to high temperatures and pressures, enters the condenser. The condenser is a radiator that cools the refrigerant vapour into a high-pressure liquid through forced draft by a cooling fan. The condenser dissipates heat to the surrounding air, transforming the refrigerant vapour into a high-temperature and high-pressure liquid.

The high-pressure liquid refrigerant is introduced to the evaporator via the expansion valve. The function of the expansion valve is to regulate the flow of refrigerant by throttling and reducing the pressure. The expansion valve enables the high-pressure liquid to expand into a low-temperature and low-pressure liquid, resulting in a notable reduction in temperature and pressure.

The low-temperature and low-pressure refrigerant liquid is introduced into the evaporator. The refrigerant liquid within the evaporator evaporates rapidly, absorbing heat from the surrounding environment, including the heat from the cooling water. The temperature of the cooling water is reduced through the process of evaporative heat transfer. Concurrently, the low-temperature and low-pressure refrigerant liquid undergoes evaporation, forming a low-temperature and low-pressure vapour. Once the aforementioned process is complete, the refrigerant vapour is drawn into the compressor once more, thereby initiating a new refrigeration cycle.

The Role of Cooling Fan

The cooling fan in the air-cooled chiller is a critical component. The forced ventilation system ensures the rapid dissipation of heat from the refrigerant vapour on the condenser surface, while accelerating the evaporation of the refrigerant liquid on the evaporator surface. This optimises the cooling effect.
